I'm often asked why I chose the field of Psychology as a career; specifically as a counselor, life coach and speaker. Here’s the truth... it found me. From a very young age, I was always naturally attuned to observing people with a keen curiosity and was voted “most caring” by my 6th grade classmates (not sure my sister would agree!) I volunteered at a VA hospital for blind veterans and worked at a community school for disadvantaged children, experiences that deepened my understanding of human resilience. Growing up, I also witnessed firsthand the struggles a family faces when a loved one presents with social/emotional and mental health challenges. I observed how frustrating it can be to navigate the system and deal with the implicit bias that “only weak people seek outside help”. In truth, the strongest people I know will ask for assistance at some point in life. This fact sparked my desire to support others on their own journeys. After college, I worked as a special education teacher and later pursued a master's degree in Corporate Employee Assistance and Human Service (Yes, I even traded in my sneakers for a briefcase! )
I understand personally and professionally, how tough it can be to find someone who truly “gets”you. My goal is for you to leave the initial therapy session feeling understood with a sense of hope and direction.
